| Job Title | Collections Administrator / Education & Museum Officer (Nov 09) | | Location | London | | Salary | £27,000 + benefits | | Vacancy Description | Working closely with the Bank’s Museum Curator and reporting to the Manager of the Education & Museum Group, the jobholder will be responsible for the day-to-day work relating to the Bank’s historical collections including: documentation and database management; tracking and recording the movement of objects; inventory checks; handling and storage; security and care; advising on national collections management standards and good practice; and assisting the Curator with displays and exhibitions. As part of a small team of Education & Museum Officers, the jobholder will also deal with enquires and will assist with the Bank’s public education and information programme by helping Museum visitors to engage with, and improve their understanding of, the Bank’s work and history.

| Collections Administrator / Education & Museum Officer (Nov 09) | •Assisting with the management of the Bank’s collections to recognised collections management standards and practice. Helping to formulate internal policies and processes that are consistent with these standards. •Managing the collections database and maintaining an accurate up-to-date documentation of the items in the collections. •Planning and managing the annual inventory check for each collection. •Assisting with the security, care and conservation of the collections, including co-ordinating the conservation work. Assisting with appropriate storage of the collections and environmental monitoring. Some manual handling is involved. •Assisting the Curator with the maintenance of existing Museum displays and with new displays and temporary exhibitions, including some research. •Talking to visitors at the Museum Information Desk and in the Museum galleries. Answering questions about the Museum displays and about the Bank’s role and history. Doing presentations, gallery talks and conducted tours. Assisting with special one-off events such as the Open Door and Open House weekends. •Assisting with the delivery of other aspects of the Bank’s education programme including ad hoc projects and running live competitive events for the Bank’s schools’ competition. •Occasional travel, evening and weekend work will be required to cover events. The dates of these events are known well in advance. (Weekend working on up to 3 weekends per year; overnight travel – around 4 nights per year.)
Key Skills/Requirements •Applicants should have a relevant museum qualification (degree or similar) and / or equivalent relevant museum experience (minimum of 2 years work / volunteering experience).
We also require: •A demonstrable knowledge of museum collections management standards and practice and of the security and conservation issues relating to historical artefacts. •Experience of using a collections management database and / or museum records management system is essential. Knowledge of the Adlib system would be helpful, but not essential. •A demonstrable interest in, and some knowledge of, the current role and history of the Bank. •Ability to multi-task while maintaining high standards with scrupulous attention to detail. •Practical problem solving skills. The ability to exercise judgement and discretion. •Good drafting skills in order to be able to produce reports, document procedures, make written recommendations and take minutes. •Be an effective, confident and engaging communicator (both written and oral). The jobholder is required to communicate with a wide range of people. Must enjoy engaging with the public and have the ability to speak confidently to the public, including to groups of visitors. •Ability to work flexibly across the range of Education & Museum Group functions. Ability to work effectively alone and on own initiative as well as collaboratively as part of a team. •Good working knowledge and understanding of the standard Microsoft packages | |
